Abu Simbel
Located a three hour ride south of Aswan, Abu Simbel is 25 miles north of
the Sudan border on Lake Nasser. The great temple of Ramses II was
lost to the shifting desert sands until rediscovered in 1813 by Burckhardt,
an archeologist exploring the area. He saw a head of a massive 60
foot statue sticking out of the sand an ultimately recovered the temple
from its own sand tomb. Now a major tourist destination, Abu Simbel
is a major draw card and the only major destination in southern Egypt.
There have been terrorist attacks here in recent years and travel
is somewhat restricted but it is still well worth the effort.
