Memphis and Saqqara
Containing the oldest large funerary complex in the world, Saqqara is a
place of superlatives. It is not possible to ride around to see all
the different pyramids in the area, even with a camel and guide to take
you around simply because the area is too large. If you are truly
into Egyptian pyramids, you will need to spend several days wandering the
plateau. Ultimately, the Step Pyramid of Djoser/Zoser is the example
of conversion between a mastaba flat mausoleum and the pyramids of the
Old Kingdom. Saqqara is nice, once you get past the harpies and
guides looking for tips, in that you can wander freely to see what you
want at your own pace compared to the pyramid complex at Giza which
nearly requires a guide to prevent you from being accosted by others
trying to guide you. The only remains of Memphis is the museum
dedicated to the city. Once a great metropolis of ancient Egypt,
only statues and tablets remain of one of antiquity’s greatest civilizations.
