Ramesseum, Valley of the Kings, Queens and Workers
Located on the western or Dead side of the Nile, so named for the side of the
river where the sun sets, all of the famous tombs of the New Kingdom are located
including the tomb of Tutankhamon. The Valley of the Kings is a large area,
truly a valley. On a particular tour, you will likely only see three
tombs, hopefully the best. I visited the tombs of Merenptah, Ramses III
and Ramses I, arguably the most decorated and best examples in the Valley of
the Kings. Some tombs are closed on certain days, like Ramses II on this
day. For additional money, one can visit the smallish tomb of
Tutankhamon but at the behest of my guide in interest of seeing the best
and most decorated, I skipped that tomb in favor of seeing much more significant examples.
Beware the tomb guardians and harpies looking to show you things in the tombs
as they are looking for baksheesh, tips. If you want to learn and see
more, they will be happy to show you but be aware of the cost. The
Valley of the Queens only had a few interesting tombs and were much more
accessible than the Kings and were less trafficked. The valley of the
Workers was interesting in that one saw the huge landscape of housing and the
tiny tombs of the worker supervisors.
