Suzhou
Billed as the "Oriental Venice", Suzhou (pronounced Su-Jo) was
constructed
in 512BC and was given its current name during the Sui dynasty (581
AD). It
is a city interconnected with rivers, where canals run along many of the
major roads and course all around the housing areas. Suzhou is also on
the
Grand Canal (1,700 kilometer), connecting Beijing to Hangzhou; the
canal
was built in the 5th century BC and then extended in the 7th and 13th
centuries. Many Chinese consider this city a nice place to retire.
