Himeji
In the Hyogo Prefecture, Himeji is a city of 460,000 people has the distinction of having one of the most picturesque castles in
all of Japan. Just a short walk from the train station, you will see the collision of
the modern with the ancient. Right next to the castle last inhabited by the last lord
of Himeji, Lord Sakai is the Nishi-Oyasiki-Ato or Koko-en garden, constructed to celebrate the
100th anniversary of modern Himeji.  For the purpose of a short visit, you can hop on a city
bus and get to the castle in mere minutes without knowing any Japanese, as the bus drivers know
you are there to visit but one place likely. It will be well worth your while to purchase
a dual ticket to tour the castle and gardens. Make every effort to find a readily available
English-speaking guide as your experience there will improve 10-fold. Also, make sure you bring
a gift to give to your tour guide - a simple bar of chocolate will work.
