Miyajima
Located off the coast of Japan near Hiroshima, Miyajima is home to the world cultural
heritage site of Itsukushima Shinto Shrine with one of the most famous free-standing
Otori structures in the world, first constructed in 593. The shinto shrine contains a few of the remaining Kamakura
(1185-1333) period structures in existance, reflecting several architectural styles
of the time. Deer roam about the island, especially ferry landing, waiting for
tourists to purchase and dole out deer food chips. If you are lucky, you will
get to see monkeys at the top of Mt. Misen via a cable car or hiking.
