Auschwitz - BirkenauThe most famous site of the Nazi holocaust can be found at the dual camps of Auschwitz and Birkenau, an hour bus ride out of Krakow. If you are in this part of the world, the site is not to be missed. Over 100,000 people were executed at this place, made famous by Schindler's List. The sweet scent of almonds produced by the Zyklon-B gas was the last scent so many people smelled. Behind the crematoriums at the square mile facility of Birkenau is the gray lake where the human ashes were dumped, as the camp was destroyed by Nazis to hide evidence, when the Red Army approached at the end of World War II.
