This log is dedicated to the car accidents I've seen actually happen in-process. Coming on a wreck that's already come to a stop
doesn't count. Only actually crashing, sliding, rolling, spinning vehicles count for this log. The wreck count is up
to 20, though I'm still typing these up, as it's taken time to remember all the crashes.
- 20 Near UCSD, San Diego, CA 11-10-10: Night, clear weather, backed up traffic. Man sitting beside me in traffic eastbound on Genesee on uphill toward I-5 must have let go
of his clutch, not payed attention and rolled back into woman 10 feet behind him. They pulled off to the side. The woman honked
her horn prior to impact but the man did not realize what was going on. I couldn't see if he was fiddling with his phone
or not. The CA cell-phone & texting law seem non-existent with all the drivers I see on their phones now.
- 19 Newport, RI, Rear end 6-10-10: From a stop light, a Hyundai Santa Fe was too slow for a Smart car. The smart car rear-ended
the Santa Fe. The Smart car then moved back and its hood fell to the street. It appeared no one was hurt. The drivers
sure looked shocked, though.
- 18 San Diego 5-3-10: T-bone at intersection of Mira Mesa Blvd. and Westview Parkway. Ford Explorer turning left from westbound Mira
Mesa Blvd, going with green light t-bone strike by a east-bound Accord/Camary that ran the red light. Front of Accord/Camary
squashed and stopped, Explorer spun 360 into south-east corner of intersection.
- 17 San Diego, CA 7-8-09: I-5 north, Single car, driver in NB #1 lane following too close, when traffic came to a shockwave stop,
he dodged toward the center divide, crashed and slid against it and came to a stop. Smoke and parts went flying.
- 16 Temecula, CA 6-1-07: SB-I15 north of Winchester. Accord driver driving beside me @ 70MPH in exit lane. Traffic ahead
was fully stopped. I looked over and thought she was going fast for stopped traffic. I saw her car nose dive, then
struck fully-stopped vehicles, dissapearing from beside me with me now passing stopped cars. Wow. Someone might have died but
surely someone went to the hospital.
- 15 Carlsbad, CA 8-1-05: South bound driver going 100+ mph in Acura Integra doesn't slow down for heavy traffic,
tries to swerve slickly (like a jerk) to the #1 (inside) lane, loses control, drives all the way across the freeway,
way up onto the west bank of the freeway, then again shoots across and hits the center divide, and slides to a stop.
It looked as though he hit the gas instead of the brake after things went wrong for him. Amazingly, he crossed the
freeway twice perpendicularly without hiting anyone in heavy traffic.
- 14 Portland, OR 4-1-02: NB-I5. Red full size Dodge truck hit brakes in rain, following vehicle too close. Swerved to
the right shoulder to avoid accident. Locked up brakes and struck center k-rail, sid to a stop. No apparent injuries.
- 13 Escondido, I-15N, 2005: Clear, afternoon, light traffic. I merged from SR-78E to I-15N. Sedan ahead of me swerves
dramatically to avoid a large black object. He lightly taps it and the object doesn't move that much - it's heavy. I slow
way down. He does the classic over-correct swerve into one lane, then tries to get back into his. This typical error takes
a dodge and stay to an under-damped oscillation which puts him into a spin after 2 cycles. He slides backwards into the
center divide, scraping the side of his car. I slow down and check to make sure he's okay. He sits staring, facing the
wrong way in traffic but appears unhurt, just shocked. The trick to this is when dodging, end up in the other lane and
don't go back to your previous lane.
- 6 - 12 missing, have to recall them.
-
5 Sports Arena area, San Diego, 2001: Clear weather, night, light traffic. Following red Jetta 5 seconds back through intersection.
Small Toyota truck blows through the light, 20+ seconds red to him, and t-bones the jetta. He slides to a stop, his head blowing out
the back window. The female driver gets out as well as the male passenger. She keeps saying, "Just tell me it's not my fault", over
and over. They both had minor scratches but no outward injuries. The driver of the pickup was sitting dazed, as though he was
drunk. Immediately an SDPD officer is on the scene and took over. I give him my card
as a witness but never received a call back on it. Probably good.
- 4 Mira Mesa, I-805N, 2000: Clear weather, morning, heavy traffic. Driver in red Honda doesn't pay attention to stopped
traffic on I-805N over SR-52, rams stopped car at maybe 15MPH differential.
- 3 San Diego, I-5N, 1998: Perfect weather, heavy traffic. Single car weaves in between two cars in another lane, over-corrects,
swishes back and forth several times before spinning out. Traffic was heavy so I couldn't see the aftermath.
- 2 El Cajon 2-1-1996: EB-I8 east of La Mesa, rain. 80's vintage Volvo struck water puddle and begun spinning in circles. All
traffic stopped. Driver turned around and kept driving. No damage.
- 1 San Diego 3-1-1994: N-I5 north of Palm Avenue. Border patrol, in pursuit of vehicle carrying illegal aliens (criminals),
dropped back once traffic became heavy. Looked like a responsible decision. Illegals continued speeding, merged and clipped Toyota 4-Runner. 4-Runner
slides sideways like PIT maneuver, perpendicular to traffic flow, then flipped over in front of me. No sound. Illegals'
car hit center divide, all occupants evacuated vehicle an ran across SB-I5 lanes. I got out and helped Border Patrol
get woman out of flipped over 4-Runner.
