Here is a head to head comparison of two popular Nikon lenses, the 18-35mm versus 18-70mm DX, against equivalent focal length prime lenses using a D70.  Each focal length is compared vs the equivalent prime focal length.  The tripod and camera were not moved when the lenses were switched, though there is a little variation in image position after bumping around the tripod while changing lenses.  The Nikon IR remote was used to trigger the camera to eliminate camera shake caused by pressing the shutter release.
