How fast do Nikon lenses focus?? July 24, 2008 Return to articles |
|
How fast does Nikon lens "X" focus? This is a common question on Nikon forums all around the
world. Here, we have captured the focus speed for users to compare their favorite lens against.
At least two tests were performed on each lens. The first was an infinity to near focus point and back to infinity. This gives an idea of the max throw time on a given lens. Then, a more practical test was done with moving the focus point from a near to medium distance. All of these tests were done on a Nikon D200. This is a fast camera body and a good focuser. This camera has been beaten out by the new Nikon D300 and D700. But, it's still no slouch when it comes to performance. It beats all Nikon bodies below it and many former bodies. The most interesting thing about focus speed is not the lens drive speed of the body, but rather the focus capability of the on-board focus module. This is what really differentiates camera bodies. Videos Nikon 80-400mm, 12' limit to 7'. Nikon 80-400mm, 12' limit to near focus point to 12' limit. Nikon 80-400mm, infinity to the 15' focus limit to infinity. Nikon 80-400mm, infinity to near limit to infinity. This test is generally not practical because I have my limit switch on all the time. Rarely do I ever shoot things moving quickly closer than 15'. Nikon 12-24mm, 1.5' to 7' focus change. Nikon 12-24, infinity to near to infinity. Nikon 70-300D, 15' to 7' focus change. Nikon 70-300D, infinity to near focus limit to infinity. Nikon 18-35, 1.25' to 7' focus change. Nikon 18-35, infinity to near to infinity. Nikon 85mm f1.4, 3' to 7' focus change. Nikon 85mm f1.4, infinity to near to infinity. Nikon 24mm, 1.25' to 7' focus change. Nikon 24mm, infinity to near to infinity. Nikon 20mm, 1.5' to 7' focus change. Nikon 20mm, infinity to near to infinity. Nikon 35mm f2, 2' to 7' focus change. Nikon 35mm f2, infinity to near to infinity. Nikon 50mm f1.8, 3' to 7' focus change. Nikon 50mm f1.8, infinity to near to infinity. Conclusions These focus speed videos allow a viewer to compare their lens focus speed to the above lenses. They provide a base reference and give a good idea of the relative drive speed of any particular Nikon camera body to the D200. |
