Lake Amitsorsuaq
Lake Amitsorsuaq is the second major lake along the Arctic Circle Trail after leaving Kangerlussuaq. It is possible to travel along Amitsorsuaq on foot over rocky, Class III terrain or by canoe if they’re available. After a freezing snow storm with the high rocks covered in ice, the canoe was the better option. The most important point to consider is the weather. The wind was to my back on the Katiffik to Canoe Center leg, so canoe travel was possible. It’s nearly impossible to canoe solo into a headwind. With a constant eye on the fickle weather conditions, the 10-mile trip is an adventure all to itself. It is possible to stop on the big island in the lake and take a trip to the top to take in the view. Just don’t let your canoe float away, otherwise you will be a permanent denizen of Lake Amitsorsuaq on the Arctic Circle Trail.
