Strait of Magellan
The Strait of Magellan is a strange character in the history of Chile and Argentina. In 1520, Magellan passed through
his namesake strait on his landmark journey around the world. As Europeans were more interested in establishing trade
to the East, the area was disgregarded and relatively left alone until the middle of the 19th century. The Strait of
Magellan cuts off Tierra del Fuego from the mainland of South America and routinely pounds ships with fierce westerlies,
making the crossing more than just a boat ride even today.
