Colonia
Colonia del Sacramento, Uruguay, a short ferry ride across the river Plate from Buenos Aires, is well worth the day trip to take in the UNESCO Heritage city. The 17th century coblestone streets of the old town, Barrio Historico, guide you around the original outpost buildings of the fort. The ramparts afford an expansive view of Colonia, unlike the short sidewalks along the paved streets of the modern city, just a few blocks away. Art galleries, eateries and historical sites abound in this quaint little outpost of Uruguay, making it well worth the effort to visit.
