Lava Beds National Monument
Just below the surface of this monument in the boiling summer lies an underground network
of lava tubes coursing for miles. The odd underground world of melted rock, bats,
cave crickets and petroglyphs is explorable by almost anyone. You can go through
caves that are 80' high or crawl through tubes that are 2' not-so-tall. The underground
air is 55 degrees or cooler as in Skull Cave were 1' of ice covers the lower cave floor
hundreds of feet below the forbidding surface. Lava Beds National Monument is probably
one of the most remote locations from the major cities in California so only the hearty will
make the worth while trip. Note that for brevity, National Monument has been abbreviated
to NM in some places, not to intend New Mexico.
