San Jacinto Peak
One of the few peaks above 10,000 feet in southern California, San Jacinto rises
10,834 feet above the Palm Springs resort area. The most popular route to
the top is via the Palm Springs tram, a seemingly vertical ascent of the eastern
side of the mountain. These pictures reflect the trail along the Marion mountain
trail approach, starting 7 miles north of Idyllwild, a small town sitting in the western
shadow of San Jacinto. The trail has an average elevation gain of 1,000 feet per
mile, approximately a 20% grade with a total gain of 4,900 feet. Even though the trail is extremely steep and
covered in 6 feet of snow on Memorial Day 2005, it has some of the best views
of any of the San Jacinto approaches.
