Great Basin National Park
The only National Park in Nevada, Great Basin National Park was
created to preserve an excellent sample of the mountain islands in
the Great Basin Desert of Nevada. Each desert island contains
distinct subspecies of plants and animals that have been isolated
from each other making each island's inhabitants distinguishable.
Containing bristlecone pines that are over 4,000 years old, Wheeler
Peak at an altitude of 13,063-foot, Lehman Caves and numerous
limestone caverns, Great Basin National Park is worth the drive for
any of these sites alone. Situated several hours north of Las Vegas,
it is possible to make the drive and visit for two days before
returning to Vegas.
